Nonstop into Traverse City, MI

19 U.S. airports fly here without a layover, grouped by how long you'd be in the air.

Traverse City sits at the foot of two long bays, and nearly everything good about it comes from that geography. The water holds off the frost long enough for cherries and wine grapes, which is why the hills north of town are covered in both. It has quietly become a four-season town, though the seasons are not equal. July means the cherry festival and full parking lots. September and early October are better: the bay is still warm enough to swim in, the vineyards are picking, and you can get a table without planning your week around it. Sleeping Bear Dunes is forty minutes west and is the reason a lot of people come in the first place. Give it a full day rather than a photo stop.

In Traverse City

Where to stay

Delamar Traverse City

West Grand Traverse Bay

On the water at 615 East Front, with the only real beach-and-pool setup in town. Ask for a bay-facing room; the parking-lot side is a different hotel.

Grand Traverse Resort & Spa

Acme

Twenty minutes north, three golf courses, and a glass tower with long views down the bay. Good with children, less good if you wanted to walk to dinner.

Chateau Chantal

Old Mission Peninsula

A working winery with rooms, halfway up the peninsula with water on both sides. Breakfast comes with the view.

What to do

Sleeping Bear Dunes

The Dune Climb, then the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. If you go down the big dune to the lake, budget an hour to get back up. People underestimate this daily and the rangers have opinions about it.

Old Mission Peninsula wineries

Eighteen miles of narrow land with the bay on both sides and about ten wineries strung along it. Riesling is what this region genuinely does well. The reds are a work in progress.

Torch Lake

Improbably turquoise. The sandbar at the south end is the entire social scene on a Saturday in July.

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons

A former state asylum turned into shops, tasting rooms and restaurants. Strange, handsome, and worth an afternoon.

Where to eat

Trattoria Stella

In the old asylum's basement at the Commons. Housemade pasta, whole-animal butchery, and one of the better wine lists in the state. Going since 2004.

The Cooks' House

Twenty-six seats and a menu built around whatever came in that week. Book it before you book the flights.

Moomers

Farm ice cream west of town, made about thirty feet from the cows. Cherries in season.

Cherry Republic, Glen Arbor

Every conceivable use of a cherry, some of them genuinely good. Conveniently on the way back from the dunes.
