More like this: Quick Getaways
This one is built around the afternoon we leave empty. Three nights at an upscale resort in sight of the red rocks, a morning hike graded to whatever you actually feel like climbing, two hours off-road on the Broken Arrow trail, and a spa booking that is not an afterthought. Phoenix takes nonstops from more than a hundred U.S. cities, and Sedona is two hours north of it.
Highlights
- An upscale resort with a full spa, in sight of the red rocks
- Morning hikes graded from gentle to genuine scramble
- Three or four hours blocked out with nothing scheduled in them
- The Broken Arrow jeep route, two hours over slickrock
- Tlaquepaque's galleries under the sycamores, and a sunset worth planning around
Day by day
Day
1
Phoenix, then north
Fly into Phoenix, collect the car and drive two hours north while the saguaro give way to red rock. Check in and do nothing for a while. Out to Airport Mesa or Bell Rock for sunset, then dinner.
Day
2
Early hike, long afternoon
Out early, which is pleasant most of the year and essential in summer. Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte are gentle, Doe Mountain is a step up, and Cathedral Rock is a scramble that earns its view. Back for lunch, and then the part this trip is actually built around: three or four hours for the spa and the pool with nothing else in them.
Day
3
Off-road, then galleries
The Broken Arrow route after breakfast. Two hours over slickrock in an open jeep, and the best two hours in Sedona by some distance. The afternoon slows down again at Tlaquepaque among the galleries and the sycamores. Save the good dinner for tonight.
Day
4
Sunrise and the drive back
Breakfast, and a sunrise walk for anyone who wants one. Then two hours back to Phoenix. We book an afternoon flight so nobody has to leave Sedona at five in the morning.
