One airport, one hotel, one rental car and a village at the foot of Vermont's highest mountain. You get the gondola or the ski lift depending on the month, five miles of path along the river, a cider mill that still presses its own, and back roads worth driving slowly. Burlington takes nonstops from seventeen U.S. cities, and Stowe is an hour north of it.

Arrive and drive north
Land at Burlington, pick up the car and drive an hour into the mountains. Cold Hollow Cider Mill is on the way and worth the stop for the press alone. Check in, walk the village while it is still light, and eat somewhere unhurried.

Mount Mansfield
Up the mountain first thing. The gondola runs from late spring through mid-October, and once the snow arrives the same slopes are the reason people come. Either way you end up high with the Green Mountains laid out around you. The afternoon is the recreation path along the river, on foot, on a bike, or on skis.

The slow day
No fixed plan. Drive the back roads between the covered bridges and the smaller towns, then down to Waterbury for the Ben & Jerry's factory, which takes half an hour and costs almost nothing. The evening is yours: a brewery, a long dinner, or a fire and nowhere to be.

Burlington on the way out
Breakfast, one more walk through the village, then the drive back. If the flight is late enough there is time for Church Street or the Lake Champlain waterfront before the airport.
