Embarkation

Boarding the ship at the start of a cruise, including check-in, security and your first afternoon on board.

Embarkation

Embarkation is the process of boarding the ship at the start of your cruise. Most lines give you an arrival window so the terminal is not overwhelmed: you check in, show your travel documents, pass through security and walk on board, often by early afternoon. Your cabin may not be ready right away, so carry a small bag with medications, documents and anything you need for the first few hours. Bags you hand to the porters are delivered to your cabin later in the day. The ship usually sails in the late afternoon.

Before boarding: your arrival plan

The most common way to spoil a cruise is to miss the ship. A simple arrival plan prevents it.

Arrive the day before

Flights get delayed. Fly in the day before and stay near the port. In San Juan, a night in Old San Juan is a good start; in Galveston, many travellers stay on the island or in Houston; in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, hotels near the port or beach make the morning short.

If you are driving

Reserve parking in advance. The Port of Galveston takes pre-paid reservations for its official lots and runs free shuttles from economy lots. Port Canaveral publishes its own transport and parking guidance.

Know your terminal

Big ports have several terminals. The Port of Galveston lists Terminals 10, 25 and 28 and says Terminal 10 serves Royal Caribbean. San Juan Cruise Port describes separate Old San Juan and Homeport districts. Check your boarding documents for your terminal on the day.

Documents

Follow your cruise line's document guidance for every country on the itinerary. Carnival, for example, recommends travelling with a passport book even where other documents are accepted.

The morning of

  • Keep documents, medication, swimwear and a change of clothes in a day bag; checked luggage can reach your cabin later.
  • Complete the line's online check-in before you leave home.
  • Arrive at your assigned time, not hours early.

First afternoon on board

Find your muster station, check dining and show reservations, and keep the afternoon simple. Look at your onboard account so you know how charges appear.

Floreo tip

Never fly in on embarkation day for an international cruise, and avoid it for domestic ones when you can. A delayed flight is the most common way people miss a ship.
