basics
Homeport
The port where a cruise begins, and usually ends. You fly or drive here to board the ship.

A homeport is the port a cruise sails from. On a round-trip cruise it is also where you finish; on a one-way cruise you end somewhere else. Lines base ships in homeports for a season, so Seattle and Vancouver are busy Alaska homeports in summer, while Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Galveston host Caribbean ships all year. Choosing a homeport is really a travel decision: how easily you can get there, whether you need a hotel the night before, and whether you can drive instead of fly. The same itinerary can often be booked from more than one homeport.
Example
Seattle is a homeport for Alaska cruises; Juneau is a port of call.

Floreo tip
Start with the homeports you can reach easily. A slightly different itinerary from a port you can drive to often beats the perfect cruise that needs two flights.
