Shore excursion

A tour or activity in port, booked through the cruise line or independently.

Shore excursion

A shore excursion is anything you do in port beyond walking around on your own: a guided city tour, a snorkeling trip, a train ride, a cooking class. You can book through the cruise line or with a local operator. Ship excursions usually cost more, but the ship knows where you are; if a ship's tour runs late, the ship generally waits. With an independent tour, getting back on time is your responsibility. Some lines, such as Viking and Regent Seven Seas, include excursions in the fare.

Shore excursions: line or independent?

On each port day you can book through the cruise line, book with a local operator, or explore on your own.

Booking through the line

What happens if a line tour runs late is a line-specific promise, not a universal rule. Royal Caribbean, for example, says that if a tour booked through it is delayed, the ship will wait, and if the ship cannot wait it will arrange for you to rejoin at no cost. It also says the ship will not wait for guests touring on their own. Check the wording for your line before you rely on it.

Line tours are simple to book and charge to your onboard account. They usually cost more and groups are larger.

Booking independently

  • Often smaller groups and more choice.
  • You are responsible for getting back on time. Note the all-aboard time, which is usually earlier than departure; Virgin's itinerary pages, for example, say all aboard is an hour before departure on embarkation day.
  • Check reviews, cancellation terms and how the operator handles weather.

Exploring on your own

Good in walkable ports such as Nassau or Key West, or at line-run private islands where everything is close. At Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean says most experiences are free, with some areas sold separately.

Tendering

In some ports the ship anchors and you go ashore by small boat. This takes time; allow for it.

How to choose

  • Use the line's tour for long or far-off excursions where timing is tight.
  • Go independent for short, close activities with a clear return time.
  • Keep at least one port day light.

Floreo tip

Where timing is tight or the sights are far from the ship, such as Rome from Civitavecchia, book through the ship or allow generous margin. In easy walking ports, go on your own.
