Icon of the Seas
Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean's family-focused ship with Surfside, a neighbourhood built for families, and the Category 6 waterpark. It suits groups who want a full day on board between ports.
Floreo notes
Who this ship suits
Icon of the Seas is built for families and mixed groups who measure a cruise by how much there is to do on the ship. Royal Caribbean describes Surfside as its first neighbourhood built just for families, and the ship carries Category 6, which the line calls the largest waterpark at sea, with six slides. If your group spans toddlers to grandparents, the appeal is that everyone can split up during the day and meet again at dinner.
Who might look elsewhere
If you want quiet decks, a slower pace or a ship that fades into the background of the destinations, Icon is a lot of ship. Couples who prefer adult spaces and a calmer evening may be happier on a Celebrity Edge Series ship or on Virgin Voyages, which is adults only.
On board
The line lists thrill attractions such as Crown's Edge, part skywalk and part ropes course, along with the FlowRider surf simulator, a climbing wall and a sports court. These are the kind of extras that shape a day at sea: plan which ones matter to your children and check any height or age limits on the current activity pages before you promise anything.
Cabins and planning
On a ship this size, cabin location matters more than usual. Families with young children often prefer to be near the family neighbourhood and lifts; light sleepers may prefer a cabin away from pool decks and late venues. Ask us to check the current deck plan for what sits above and below a cabin before you choose it.
Planning checklist
- Decide which attractions and reservations matter most, and check whether any carry an extra charge.
- Choose a cabin by location as well as type.
- Plan the night before in Miami so a flight delay does not cost you the ship.

From an advisor
Pick two or three things each person most wants to do, then plan the sea days around them. On a ship with this much choice, a short list keeps the week relaxed.
