Nonstop into Anchorage, AK

32 U.S. airports fly here without a layover, grouped by how long you'd be in the air.

Anchorage holds about forty percent of Alaska's population on a strip of flat land between an inlet and a mountain range, which means moose walk through neighborhoods and nobody finds it worth mentioning. It is not a beautiful city. It is an extremely useful one. Most people treat it as a staging post for Denali, Seward or a cruise, and that is fair. But the Chugach range begins at the eastern edge of town, and you can be above the treeline forty minutes after leaving your hotel. June and July give you nineteen hours of daylight. September brings the colors and the aurora returns. Winter is dark, cold and much cheaper, and the northern lights are the reason to accept all three.

In Anchorage

Where to stay

The Hotel Captain Cook

Downtown

Three towers, teak paneling throughout, and an Anchorage institution since 1965. The top-floor bar has the best view in the city.

Alyeska Resort

Girdwood

Forty minutes south along Turnagain Arm, at the foot of a ski mountain with an aerial tram and a Nordic spa. Better than anything in the city itself.

The Lakefront Anchorage

Lake Hood

On the busiest floatplane base in the world, so the view from the bar is aircraft taking off from water all evening.

What to do

The Alaska Railroad

The Coastal Classic to Seward runs four and a half hours through country with no road beside it. Book the dome car and plan nothing else that day.

Turnagain Arm

The Seward Highway runs along a fjord with beluga whales, bore tides and sheer rock on the far side. An hour's drive that people routinely rate above wherever they were driving to.

Flattop Mountain

The most climbed peak in Alaska, twenty minutes from downtown and about ninety minutes up. The whole city and the inlet laid out beneath you.

Anchorage Museum

Larger and better than the city implies, with a serious Alaska Native collection held jointly with the Smithsonian.

Where to eat

49th State Brewing

The downtown location, The Rail, sits by the railroad depot. Game meats on the menu and a roof deck facing the inlet.

A reindeer sausage cart

On a downtown street corner from about ten in the morning. Onions, mustard, a few dollars, and far better than it has any right to be.

Halibut over king crab

A good deal of the king crab on Alaskan menus is imported. Halibut, black cod and salmon are landed here. Order those instead.
