Nonstop into Bozeman, MT

24 U.S. airports fly here without a layover, grouped by how long you'd be in the air.

Bozeman is a college town in a valley ringed by four mountain ranges, and over the last decade it has become the front door to Yellowstone for anyone who would rather not connect through Salt Lake. Main Street still looks like a Western town because it is one. The park's north entrance at Gardiner is about an hour and a half south. Big Sky is an hour the other way. Neither is a reason to stay in Bozeman, but both are reasons to fly into it. Summer is busy and bright. Winter is cold in a dry, tolerable way and the skiing is the point. September is the quiet secret: the crowds thin, the aspens turn, and the elk start bugling in the park.

In Bozeman

Where to stay

Kimpton Armory Hotel

Downtown

The old art deco National Guard armory on West Mendenhall, converted. Rooftop pool and the Sky Shed bar above, a basement music room called Tune Up underneath.

The LARK

Downtown

Modern and unfussy, with a patio over Main Street and Treeline Coffee Roasters in the lobby. The best value downtown.

Big Sky Resort

Big Sky

An hour south, and an enormous mountain. Worth it if skiing is the purpose of the trip rather than the park.

What to do

Yellowstone's north entrance

An hour and a half to Gardiner and the Roosevelt Arch. This is the only park entrance open to cars all year, and the Lamar Valley beyond it is the best wildlife watching in the lower forty-eight.

Museum of the Rockies

One of the largest dinosaur collections anywhere, most of it dug out of Montana. Not a rainy-day fallback. A genuine reason to give up a morning.

Hyalite Canyon

Twenty minutes from town: a reservoir, waterfalls, and in winter one of the densest concentrations of ice climbing in the country.

Main Street

Three walkable blocks of brick storefronts, bookshops and bars. Do it the first evening to get the measure of the place.

Where to eat

Blackbird Kitchen

On East Main. Wood-fired, Italian-leaning, small, and the reservation to make before any of the others.

Montana Ale Works

In the old Northern Pacific freight house, forty-odd taps, loud in the right way. Where the town actually eats.

Wild Crumb

A bakery worth building a morning around, five minutes from downtown.
