Nonstop into Maui, HI

23 U.S. airports fly here without a layover, grouped by how long you'd be in the air.

Maui is two volcanoes joined by a low isthmus, which is why the island has a rainforest on one side, a desert on the other, and a ten-thousand-foot summit in the middle. You can drive between all three before lunch. Lahaina burned in August 2023 and much of the town was lost. It has reopened in stages, with Front Street returning to traffic in the summer of 2026. West Maui welcomes visitors again, and spending money there now does more good than staying away, but go with some awareness of what happened and of who is still rebuilding. The rest of the island was untouched. Upcountry, Hana, Haleakalā and the south shore beaches are as they always were. Whale season runs roughly December to April and is genuinely extraordinary.

In Maui

Where to stay

Montage Kapalua Bay

West Maui

Large residential-style suites on the quieter north end of the west shore, above a bay that is good for snorkeling most mornings.

Hotel Wailea

South Maui

Fifteen adults-only suites up the hill with the water below. The only Relais & Châteaux property in Hawaii.

Hana-Maui Resort

Hana

At the far end of the Hana road, which is precisely the point: you stay so that you are not driving those curves twice in one day.

What to do

Haleakalā

Ten thousand feet, and the crater looks like a different planet. Sunrise needs a reservation sixty days out. Sunset needs none, and is nearly as good for a fraction of the effort.

The road to Hana

Some six hundred curves and fifty-nine bridges. The mistake everyone makes is treating it as a route to a destination rather than as the day itself. Start early, stop often, stay the night if you can.

Molokini

A sunken crater rim three miles off the south shore with visibility that regularly passes a hundred feet. Morning boats only; the wind gets up after noon.

ʻĪao Valley

A green needle of rock in a valley behind Wailuku, ten minutes off the highway and routinely skipped. Short, easy, and worth the detour.

Where to eat

Mama's Fish House

On the beach at Pāʻia, and the most booked restaurant in Hawaii for good reason. Months ahead, or the bar at opening time.

Pāʻia town

The old sugar town on the north shore and the best concentration of casual food on the island. Fish tacos, shave ice, and surfers coming off the water.

Poke from a supermarket counter

It sounds wrong and it is correct. The best poke on Maui is sold by the pound at a grocery deli, not in a restaurant.
