Nonstop into Charleston, SC

53 U.S. airports fly here without a layover, grouped by how long you'd be in the air.

Charleston is small enough to walk and old enough to make walking the point. Below Broad Street the peninsula is mostly eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses, and what surprises people is that they are still houses. This is a neighborhood with a lot of ironwork, not a preserved district. Most people come for three or four nights and spend nearly all of it within a mile of Meeting Street. That is a fine plan. But the harbor is the other half of the city, and the ferry out to Fort Sumter is the cheapest way to understand why everything is laid out the way it is. Spring and late fall are the sweet spots. July and August are genuinely hot, and the afternoon thunderstorm is not a rumor.

In Charleston

Where to stay

The Dewberry

Marion Square

A 1960s federal building reborn in walnut, brass and terrazzo. The Citrus Club is on the roof, and the ground-floor Living Room is the best-looking place in the city to wait out a rainstorm.

Zero George

Ansonborough

Five houses from 1804 arranged around a courtyard, sixteen rooms in total. Quiet end of the peninsula, and spring books out early.

The Vendue

French Quarter

Part hotel, part rotating art gallery, one block off the water. The rooftop is the one locals will admit to using.

What to do

The ferry to Fort Sumter

Leaves from Liberty Square by the aquarium, a bit over two hours all in. The fort is interesting. The harbor on the way back is the part people actually remember.

The Battery and Rainbow Row

Go early. By ten the light has gone flat and the sidewalk is three abreast.

Old Slave Mart Museum

Small, on Chalmers Street, built on the site where people were sold. The most important forty minutes in Charleston.

Middleton Place

Half a day up the Ashley River, and the oldest landscaped gardens in the country. Magnolia Plantation next door is showier. Pick one, not both.

Where to eat

Husk

Nothing from outside the South comes through the door. The menu is rewritten daily and the skillet cornbread is not optional.

Lewis Barbecue

Texas brisket by way of Austin, sold by the pound on North Nassau. Michelin noticed. Go at eleven.

Bertha's Kitchen

A cafeteria line on the Northside and a James Beard America's Classic. Fried chicken, lima beans, okra soup. Closes when the food runs out.

Leon's Oyster Shop

Fried chicken and a dozen on ice in a converted body shop on upper King. No reservations, so arrive at open or plan to wait.

Charleston: The Golden-Hour Escape

3 nights

A quick getaway that still feels like you went somewhere. Three nights at a 25-room boutique hotel on King Street, days for the historic streets and the Battery, and one evening on the water past Fort Sumter and under the Ravenel Bridge. Flights, hotel, and the harbor dinner arrive as one quote and one itinerary, and Charleston is nonstop from more than fifty cities.
