Sarasota is where the circus money went. John Ringling wintered here, built a Venetian Gothic palace on the bay, and left the state an art museum full of Old Masters, which is not what anyone expects to find on the Gulf coast of Florida.
The beaches are the other half. Siesta Key's sand is ninety-nine percent quartz, which means it stays cool enough to walk on barefoot at two in the afternoon in July. That one fact explains most of the traffic on the bridge.
Winter is the season and the town roughly doubles in size. The shoulder months either side are the sweet spot. Summer is hot, wet by late afternoon, and a great deal cheaper.

Actually on the sand, ten minutes from downtown and far less formal. Take a Gulf-facing room or there is not much point.
The Sarasota Modern
Rosemary District
A nod to the Sarasota School of Architecture, which is a real mid-century movement and not a marketing phrase. Walkable to downtown.
What to do
The Ringling
Fifty-odd acres on the bay: an art museum built around Ringling's Old Masters, the circus museum, and Cà d'Zan, the house itself. Open ten to five, closed only three days a year, and it wants most of a day.
Siesta Key Beach
Quartz sand that stays cool underfoot when everything else is scorching. Early for parking, or late on a Sunday for the drum circle.
Myakka River State Park
Half an hour east and a completely different Florida. Alligators, a canopy walkway through the treetops, and airboats if you want them.
Pinecraft
A neighborhood of Amish and Mennonite snowbirds, three-wheeled bicycles and pie. Genuinely unlike anywhere else in Florida.
Where to eat
Owen's Fish Camp
Old Florida in Burns Court. Opens at four, takes no reservations, and there is a line by five. Worth it.
Stone crab, in season
Florida's stone crab season runs mid-October to the first of May. Outside those dates anything on a menu came out of a freezer last year. Inside them it is the best thing on the Gulf coast.
The grouper sandwich
The local test, blackened, at lunch, near the water. If a menu just says grouper without saying which kind, ask.
