Cruise region

Caribbean

Use Eastern, Western and Southern Caribbean as geographic starting points, then compare the actual stops, sea days and departure journey. Choose the islands that interest you, then look at the stops and departure port of a specific itinerary.

Start with the places, not the label

Royal Caribbean's regional explainer associates the Eastern Caribbean with the Virgin Islands, including St. Thomas, and San Juan; the Western Caribbean with Mexico and Jamaica; and the Southern Caribbean with Aruba and Curaçao. Use these examples to narrow your interests, then check the stops on the itinerary you are considering.

Write down the places that interest you and what you want to do there before comparing cruise descriptions. If a particular island matters, check the actual itinerary rather than treating the regional name as a promise that it is included.

Compare the shape of the trip

Our advice is to read port days and sea days together. A trip that emphasizes time ashore calls for different choices from one centered on the ship. Look at the published port hours when reviewing a specific proposal, and leave room for rest rather than assuming every stop needs an excursion.

The ship also matters independently of the geography. Discuss the onboard atmosphere, party needs and preferred pace with an advisor. Do not infer those qualities from an island list alone.

Work back to the departure journey

Choose a proposed itinerary first, then compare how you would reach its departure port. Check flights or driving, accommodation and the terminal transfer as separate parts of the plan. Our suggestion when flying is to arrive before sailing day; that gives room to respond to disruption and settle in before boarding.

Make room for changes

The National Hurricane Center identifies the Atlantic hurricane season as June 1 through November 30. Weather varies, so consider how much flexibility you have if plans change. Keep plans flexible and discuss disruption terms when considering a specific trip.

From an advisor

Tell your advisor which places matter and whether you want more time ashore or on board. Then compare a specific itinerary and the journey to its departure port, rather than choosing by the regional label alone.

Questions people ask

What do Eastern, Western and Southern mean?

They are broad geographic groupings. Royal Caribbean's examples include St. Thomas and San Juan in the east, Mexico and Jamaica in the west, and Aruba and Curaçao in the south.

Does a regional label promise certain islands?

No. Read the actual itinerary for a specific proposal. If an island matters to you, make sure it appears among the named stops.

How should I compare trips of different lengths?

Compare the stops, sea days and time away together. Ask your advisor to match the pace to your plans, including rest days and time for the departure journey.

How should I weigh dates and weather?

Consider your available dates, school holidays and flexibility if plans change. Check forecasts nearer departure and discuss disruption terms with your advisor.

Are Atlas itinerary ideas available sailings?
